Some Background about Canterhill Consulting:

Canterhill Consulting started business in Canada in 1995 serving the North American Internet design market. In 2001Canterhill became a totally independent UK business but still maintains a continued strategic link with Max Solutions Group in Toronto, Canada, our former partner.

The Internet market in England took a long time to experience the same growth and results as North America mainly because the UK phone companies did not have facilities for flat rate local phone calls. Now, for the UK, with the introduction of broadband, things have improved. Initially web designers appeared everywhere, many of them using pirated software who could undercut authentic services. As the UK market becomes more sophisticated and these "rogue" designers and others with little real business experience start to disappear, the competition to attract visitors has intensified. Unless you have a designer who knows your business and works with you then your site is often a waste of money.

Having said this, choosing an Internet designer for your business is not easy. There are few guidelines as to what is good design and what is bad, although usually, the bad ones are obvious. There are many traps and these are not so apparent in England where many businesses do not always know the available options as yet. Here are some recommendations we would like to offer, whether you decide to use Canterhill Consulting, or not:

The only ongoing fees you should pay are for:

  • Annual or quarterly site rentals (we recommend quarterly because your current designer may not be there three months down the road).
  • Question "all-inclusive" prices. We have seen rates as high as £1,250.00 per year for a one page site! You should always be able to find out what you're paying for server fees, design and any other individual items.
  • Be very careful of "Graphic Design Companies" or "Advertising Agencies" that offer Web design. In many cases they can produce great graphics but eventually, your Internet site has little substance because few graphic designers have any background experience with the operations of day to day businesses. In addition, their fees are usually extremely high.
  • Be careful of part-time designers. They don't need your site to succeed to have a regular income, they already have that.
  • Avoid using the "free web space" offered by local Internet providers for a business site. These so-called "free" sites are often subject to "downtime" and more often then not, extremely slow peak periods when the sites cannot be accessed or the download time of your site is extremely poor.
